Adobe, Amdocs, SanDisk and others join WAC

Posted by Unknown on Sunday, February 27, 2011 , under , , , , , | comments (0)

Wholesale Applications Community adds ten new members to bring total to 68.
The WAC is the open applications platform that aims to give developers the opportunity to write apps that can be deployed across multiple platforms and operators.
It's steadily adding new members despite some scepticism about the ability of a multi-operator body to make things actually happen.

The newbies are Adobe, Amdocs, Eyeline, HP, IBM, Minigate, Neustar, Panasonic, SAP and SanDisk.
WAC will reveal more details of its progress on Monday at Mobile World Congress.
“We continue to attract a healthy pipeline of members from across the mobile industry, as evidenced by companies such as HP, IBM and SAP joining the programme,” said Peters Suh, CEO, WAC.
Article continues below

“In Barcelona, we will be revealing much more in terms of WAC’s momentum, with WAC-enabled application stores and fully functional WAC devices supporting the latest applications.”

Teleca acquires SurfKitchen

Sweden's telco software firm snaps up veteran user experience specialist.
Teleca says it plans to integrate SurfKitchen’s operator-centric interfaces with its own deep connections to the mobile device sector.

It's a huge organisation, which supplies diverse software for all corners of the telco space.
But like so many others, it has moved into the content market in recent years, even creating a unit to deliver mobile apps in 2009.
The firm's swoop for SurfKitchen was driven by a desire to extend its services into user interfaces, widgets and discovery – particularly in the operator space.
SurfKitchen is one of the most enduring firms in this space, having pioneered the 'on-device portal' concept before that was effectively wiped out by apps.
However, its adapted to the changes by developing widget frameworks, subscriber management services and so on.
It will remain an independent business unit within the Teleca organisation, focusing on the operator segment, while hooking into Teleca’s global services for its customer deployment.
“This acquisition brings together two companies with very complementary skill sets”, said Michel Quazza, CEO of SurfKitchen.
“We get access to Teleca’s strong presence in the connected devices industry and its extensive partner network, while Teleca can offer its deep knowledge of embedded systems to our operator customers.
"The result is true end-to-end services that benefit the whole industry and will provide unique differentiation”.
Terms were not disclosed.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop's 'Burning Platform' memo leaks in full

Posted by Unknown on , under , | comments (0)

New boss warns 'we have multiple points of scorching heat that are fuelling a blazing fire around us' in advance of changes.
Rumours have been bubbling for several days about Nokia CEO Stephen Elop's internal 'Burning Platform' memo, outlining in blunt terms the challenges facing the company. Now it's leaked in full, and has been published on tech blog Engadget.

Elop certainly doesn't pull his punches, comparing Nokia to a North Sea oilman, who after an explosion was faced with the choice of staying on the burning platform for certain death, or jumping into the icy sea in the hope of being rescued.
"We too, are standing on a "burning platform," and we must decide how we are going to change our behaviour," writes Elop, before outlining how Nokia's business is under attack at the high-end from Apple, at the mid-range from Android, and at the low-end by Chinese manufacturers.
"While competitors poured flames on our market share, what happened at Nokia? We fell behind, we missed big trends, and we lost time. At that time, we thought we were making the right decisions; but, with the benefit of hindsight, we now find ourselves years behind," writes Elop.
"The first iPhone shipped in 2007, and we still don't have a product that is close to their experience. Android came on the scene just over 2 years ago, and this week they took our leadership position in smartphone volumes. Unbelievable."
He goes on to say that Nokia is not bringing its internal innovation to market quickly enough - "We thought MeeGo would be a platform for winning high-end smartphones. However, at this rate, by the end of 2011, we might have only one MeeGo product in the market" - and criticises Symbian for being "an increasingly difficult environment in which to develop to meet the continuously expanding consumer requirements".
Elop also pinpoints the key shift in the mobile industry, from devices to ecosystems of hardware, software, developers, applications, ecommerce, advertising, search, social applications, and location-based services.
"Our competitors aren't taking our market share with devices; they are taking our market share with an entire ecosystem. This means we're going to have to decide how we either build, catalyse or join an ecosystem."
Elop reiterates that Nokia will announce its new strategy this Friday. if anticipation wasn't already heated around the event, it certainly will be now.
Update: Analyst Tomi Ahonen has published a long blog post in which he asserts his belief that the memo is fake, written by a US analyst, due to "several astonishing errors and also 'obvious' missing pieces". However, since Engadget's publication this morning, BBC News Online says it has also "verified that the memo is genuine".

BBC iPlayer iPad app will launch this Thursday in the UK

Posted by Unknown on , under , | comments (0)

Catch-up Beeb TV will go live, although shows will only stream over Wi-Fi. A US version will follow in June.

UK broadcaster the BBC will launch its long-awaited native iPlayer app for iPad this Thursday, with a US version to follow in June.
The news was tweeted by BBC interactive operations engineer Geoff Marshall. "Player App for iPad is being released this Thursday - 10th Feb. 3G connection is browse only. Browse+Playback requires Wi-Fi."
He followed up by confirming that the US version will launch in June, and that there is no iPhone version of the app launching at this time. Another tweet from Marshall said that the US version of the app will be subscription-based.
Apple may not be so keen on tweets suggesting that the app will "take advantage of the higher-res screen that iPad2 has got", and repeating rumours that "iPad2 rumoured to be out next week too, but probably April in reality".
iPlayer is already available to iPad users in its web incarnation, but this is the first time it has been released as a native iOS app.

HTC invests $40m in OnLive to fuel cloud-based smartphone gaming

Posted by Unknown on Saturday, February 26, 2011 , under , | comments (1)

In its second content-focused deal in two days, HTC has revealed it is buying a stake in cloud gaming startup OnLive.
Fresh from buying mobile multimedia firm Saffron Digital yesterday, HTC has announced a second content investment. The handset maker is buying a $40 million stake in US cloud gaming startup OnLive.
The news was announced in a filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange, and subsequently expanded on in an interview with theWall Street Journal.

Spokesperson Maggie Cheng tells the WSJ that the deal will "strengthen its gaming capabilities and help HTC tap into increasing demand for games on smartphones".
OnLive enables people to play rich PC/console games on devices without running them locally - hence the 'cloud' aspect. OnLive has already launched an iPad app, in December last year, but it currently only allows people to watch others playing OnLive games, rather than play themselves.
HTC has not elaborated further on its plans to integrate OnLive into its devices, but we suspect there may be some interesting announcements ahead for the partnership, particularly as HTC unveils its first tablets in the coming months.

Kindle gets more social with Public Notes and sharing features

Posted by Unknown on , under , | comments (0)

Amazon updates Kindle owners about new features coming to the company's e-reading devices in a forthcoming software update.
Amazon is introducing new social features to its Kindle and Kindle 3G e-readers, although it has yet to confirm when (or if) they will be included in its mobile apps for other devices.

Revealed in a blog post, the new features include Public Notes, which enable Kindle users to "make their book notes and highlights available for others to see". What's more, they will also be able to see the Public Notes of people they follow.
Another new social feature is called Before You Go... It kicks in when a user finishes an e-book on their Kindle, prompting them to rate it, but also share their thoughts on the book with their social network. Recommendations for other e-books to read will also be provided at this stage.
The update also includes a long-demanded feature on Kindle: real page numbers. "Our customers have told us they want real page numbers that match the page numbers in print books so they can easily reference and cite passages, and read alongside others in a book club or class," explains Amazon.
"We've already added real page numbers to tens of thousands of Kindle books, including the top 100 bestselling books in the Kindle Store that have matching print editions and thousands more of the most popular books." The company says this feature will roll out to the Kindle apps in the coming months too.
Finally, newspapers and magazines delivered to Kindles will now have an improved layout, with a "quick snapshot" of news to direct readers to the most interesting stories. Kindle owners can manually download the new software update now, or wait for it to be pushed out to them via Wi-Fi in the near future.

Rumours build of Nokia Windows switch

Posted by Unknown on , under , , , , , | comments (0)

Internal memo describes firm as 'standing on a burning platform' and hints at need for drastic change.
TechCrunch has reported that well-placed sources suggest Nokia will move to Windows Phone 7 given new CEO Stephen Elop’s previous connection with Redmond.

The speculation centres on an internal Nokia memo titled ‘Standing on a burning platform’, whose central metaphor sums up the precarious position the firm is in, with iPhone grabbing the high-end, Android rapidly plundering the centre and Asian budget handset makers like MediaTek mopping up the bottom.
Elop said in a Nokia earnings call that the firm must “build, catalyse or join”, ie build Symbian/Meego, catalyse Windows Phone 7 or join Android.
The feeling is that Elop's connections and Nokia's desire to play in the US make WinPho the favourite.
It could all be nonsense, of course.
In Meego, Nokia has a well-heeled partner in Intel and a vision of putting software into all manner of devices from PCs, tablets and phones to household goods and cars.

Rumours fly about Yahoo's 'Deadeye' plan for personalised mobile content

Posted by Unknown on , under , , | comments (0)

Yahoo is expected to launch a new mobile service that will personalise news and entertainment content for tablet and smartphone users.
Having lost a succession of mobile execs in the last year and a half, Yahoo's mobile strategy has been unclear, to say the least. However, two separate US reports suggest that next week's Mobile World Congress will see the company announce a significant new mobile project, codenamed 'Deadeye'.
Both the New York Times and Wall Street Journal report that the new project is aimed at smartphone and tablet users, and will involve "personalised content" for their devices.
The NYT's sources tell it that "the Yahoo platform aims to draw from a user’s declared preferences, search items, social media and other sources to find and highlight the most relevant content", with claims that more than 50 engineers have been beavering away on the project.
Deadeye's technology may also be opened up to other publishing companies and app developers for use in their apps, it claims.
Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz (pictured) is a keynote speaker at Mobile World Congress next week, so Deadeye is likely to be unveiled during her speech.

Mobile games developer Backflip Studios has 23m monthly active users

Posted by Unknown on , under , , , , | comments (0)

The company's games have generated 55 million iOS downloads and 12 million Android downloads, sending ad revenues soaring.

Indie mobile developer Backflip Studios is continuing to build a huge audience for its mix of free and paid games on iPhone and Android.
The company has now passed 77 million total downloads, founder Julian Farrior tells PocketGamer.biz. 12 million of those are on Android, while the rest come from iPhone and iPad games.
Backflip's games now muster 23 million monthly active users, and 2.25 million daily active users. All this activity is proving lucrative for the ad-supported element of the studio's business, too.
"We did 830 million ad impressions in December," says Farrior. "I'm especially excited about this number as we are rapidly trending toward the 1 billion monthly impressions mark."
In October last year, Backflip told ME that it was making $500,000 a month just from mobile ads, based on 15 million monthly active users and 600-800 million monthly ad impressions.

Qualcomm invests in Hollywood app maker

New Creative Mobile Labs startup backed by talent agency CAA and Qualcomm.

It would be tempting to pitch this as some kind of Hollywood hit factory for apps, with George Clooney as creative consultant and Jennifer Aniston as CTO.
But sadly that's not the case. Instead, the concept is to mine the creative talent CAA represents for ideas, with Qualcomm adding the engineering nous.
Michael Yanover, who heads up business development for CAA, said: “We really want to dispel the notion that these apps are celebrity driven or simply meant as companions to existing proidcuts. We want to create new apps, new franchises.”
The search is now on for CEO, executives, and engineers for the LA-based firm.

benchmark lending

What is benchmark lending?

Benchmark is a term by which we mean a set of standards used for evaluating the level of quality or performance. It cab be drawn from companies own experience or from the other companies experience. While by benchmark lending we refer to the interest rate that banks have to pay when they borrow money. Now you will be thinking that does a bank also borrow money from other in the form of loan? The answer would definitely be yes, banks also borrow money. The bank has to keep some amount of money as a reserve. But sometimes it happens that they don’t borrow money over a short period of time, say one night, and then they don’t have reserves left, for this they have to borrow money on a certain interest rate. Due to this reason, banks and mortgage companies tries to find people who are in need of a loan and then provide them loan, so banks can earn money from that loan given to customer by taking interest. It can be valuable business to the bankers and mortgage companies who are providing loan, when there are lots of customers in the market.

The bank is when borrowing money, it also has to pay some interest, that interest rate is called benchmark rate. It is the lowest interest rate which the investor accepts for a non treasury investment. It is also known as base interest rate. But the interest rate fluctuates, when there are a wide variety of pressures from surrounding. This rate is usually set by the Federal Reserve in the United States. But most people use the interest rate which is set by the Central banks. The rate is set by government officials when it is set by the Central Banks because the government wants the rate to be low so can promote lending and financial growth. With this, government also makes sure that the rate does not become so low that there is no room for earning profits.
The benchmark rates are usually used by banks and other lenders, so could determine the interest rates for their financial products, like credit cards, car loan, and home loans. The bank also uses the benchmark rate to determine the prime rate. Prime rate is the lowest interest rate which the banks offer to their customers. This prime rate is popular in Canada for benchmark lending. It is made to help people to recover from predatory lending. Banks related to the public sector, usually cut their benchmark prime lending rate to 200 basis points while private banks cut up to 50 basis points. Now-a-days, there is a difference in prime rate and benchmark rate.
Benchmark lending provides loans and banking solutions for benchmark lending group. It also provides financial assistance. You can get new home or can refinance your existing home for over ten years. The banking sector is heading towards a cheaper rate rule. Due to this, the banks and other lenders are cutting down the benchmark lending rates in two channels. In first channel, banks cut the benchmark rates to 50 bases while in second channel; they cut the rates with a 15 day lag.

Layar augmented reality browser gets 5.0 beta release for Android

AR startup Layar has launched the latest version of its Reality Browser app, with new features to make it more intuitive for users.
Augmented reality startup Layar has launched version 5.0 of its Reality Browser app, as an Android beta.
"Layar 5.0 allows for sharing, more interactivity, and more attractive layers," explains the company in a blog post. The sharing element includes integrating Facebook and Twitter, so users can share their favourite layers with friends and followers.
There is also a new animation API, which lets developers get their 3D virtual objects to move within layers. However, the biggest change in Layar 5.0 is its revamped design, which the company says aims to make the app "more user-friendly and intuitive".
Users can download the new beta from Layar's website now, and are being invited to give the company feedback. "New features will become available for iPhone soon," says the company, so for now iPhone users will have to make do with version 4.0.1 of the app.
Last month, Layar announced that its Layar Player had come out of beta, allowing developers to include Layar's technology in their own apps, rather than just launching layers within the company's Reality Browser.

200m mobile money users by 2013

Report says active users to double in the next two years.
Juniper says the need to access basic financial services by users in developing countries will drive the short term growth of the space.
Currently well under 100 million people use these services.
However, the firm cautions that for all the success, each new rollout needs an established, robust and extensive local distribution network to ensure access to the service.
Howard Wilcox, senior analyst at Juniper, said: “Our report reveals the sheer number of mobile money services, with more launches in the first eleven months of 2010 than in the whole of 2009.
"However, there are still many developing countries without these services, plus we’re seeing typically at least three services per country.”

Further findings include:
* The market has been boosted recently by person-to-person money apps in developed countries to enable people to easily make social transfers such as split the cost of meals, or pay the babysitter
* Nearly 40 per cent of active users in 2015 will be in the Africa & Middle East region

Audioboo opens up API

Audioboo opens up API

Any iPhone developer can add an Audioboo recording function into their apps.
AudioBoo is like a Twitter but with voice recording rather than text. Its been fairly quiet of late, after a burst of hype in 2009.
Its new iPhone framework supports drag and drop audio recording functionality to any iPhone app, so clearly Audioboo is hoping that the move will make its services as ubiquitous as the Facebook or Twitter sharing functions.
There are plans to do the same within Android apps.
It's also hinted that it will tie up with various high profile partners in the coming weeks, including the BBC, ABC Australia, Guardian, Aljazeera and Sky News.

PicPlz and Instagram launch their APIs for filtered photo sharing

Posted by Unknown on , under , , | comments (0)

Two hotly-tipped mobile photo-sharing services, PicPlz and Instagram, have both launched APIs for other app developers to use.

US startups PicPlz and Instragram have been the subject of plentiful buzz in recent months, thanks to the popularity of their iPhone apps, which enable people to apply visual filters to their photos and then share them.
Now both companies have launched APIs, aiming to get their services integrated into other apps, fuelling their growth.
PicPlz made its announcement first yesterday, publishing its API documentation and a code samples library, while also launching a mailing list for developer support. The company says that more than 100 developers have already applied to be part of the API initiative.
"We think that allowing developers access to our upload and filter pipeline brings something different to the table than 'just another photo-sharing API'," blogged the company. It has also announced support for Creative Commons licensing for pics posted using PicPlz, and also a new analytics dashboard for brands.
Instagram quickly followed suit with its own announcement, inviting developers to sign up to its API, or at least to sign up to be notified when they can get access. The company stressed that it intends to protect the data and images of Instagram users. "We'd like to make sure that the people we do let in create quality apps that increase the aggregate utility of the ecosystem."
Instagram now has nearly two million users, the blog post also revealed.
