Yahoo is expected to launch a new mobile service that will personalise news and entertainment content for tablet and smartphone users.
Having lost a succession of mobile execs in the last year and a half, Yahoo's mobile strategy has been unclear, to say the least. However, two separate US reports suggest that next week's Mobile World Congress will see the company announce a significant new mobile project, codenamed 'Deadeye'.
Both the New York Times and Wall Street Journal report that the new project is aimed at smartphone and tablet users, and will involve "personalised content" for their devices.
The NYT's sources tell it that "the Yahoo platform aims to draw from a user’s declared preferences, search items, social media and other sources to find and highlight the most relevant content", with claims that more than 50 engineers have been beavering away on the project.
Deadeye's technology may also be opened up to other publishing companies and app developers for use in their apps, it claims.
Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz (pictured) is a keynote speaker at Mobile World Congress next week, so Deadeye is likely to be unveiled during her speech.
