Rumours build of Nokia Windows switch

Saturday, February 26, 2011 , Posted by Unknown at 8:38 PM

Internal memo describes firm as 'standing on a burning platform' and hints at need for drastic change.
TechCrunch has reported that well-placed sources suggest Nokia will move to Windows Phone 7 given new CEO Stephen Elop’s previous connection with Redmond.

The speculation centres on an internal Nokia memo titled ‘Standing on a burning platform’, whose central metaphor sums up the precarious position the firm is in, with iPhone grabbing the high-end, Android rapidly plundering the centre and Asian budget handset makers like MediaTek mopping up the bottom.
Elop said in a Nokia earnings call that the firm must “build, catalyse or join”, ie build Symbian/Meego, catalyse Windows Phone 7 or join Android.
The feeling is that Elop's connections and Nokia's desire to play in the US make WinPho the favourite.
It could all be nonsense, of course.
In Meego, Nokia has a well-heeled partner in Intel and a vision of putting software into all manner of devices from PCs, tablets and phones to household goods and cars.
